Do I need planning permission for a new patio or driveway?
In most cases, replacing a driveway or laying a patio falls under permitted development, provided that rainwater can drain naturally within your property (e.g., using permeable block paving or installing a soakaway). We will always formally advise you during our site survey if your specific project demands planning permission.
How long does a block paving driveway take to install?
A standard double driveway normally takes our team around 4 to 7 days from full excavation to the final sweep. This timeline can vary somewhat based on existing ground conditions, the extent of the sub-base required, and intricate paving patterns.
What is the difference between Porcelain and Sandstone patios?
Porcelain is an engineered, ultra-durable stone. It absorbs almost zero water, making it extremely resistant to frost, stains, and algae. It offers a sleek, highly modern finish with uniform coloring.

Sandstone (e.g., Indian Sandstone) is a natural product. It features beautiful, organic variations in texture and color, offering a softer, traditional aesthetic. It requires slightly more maintenance over the decades compared to porcelain.
Do you remove all the waste, soil, and old paving from the site?
Absolutely. As a professional, fully-insured landscaping company, we handle complete waste disposal. We use registered grab lorries or skips to ensure your property is left spotless and all hardcore/soil waste is processed and recycled responsibly.
Is your artificial grass safe for pets and children?
Yes! All the premium artificial grass we install is highly durable, non-toxic, and perfectly safe for both children and pets. For dog owners, we use specific pet-friendly sub-bases (like granite dust) and specialized joining tapes to ensure no harsh smells linger from pet waste and the lawn remains beautifully intact.
When can I walk or park on my new paving?
You can generally walk on newly laid block paving or patios almost immediately after we finish the final joining and pointing process. However, for driveways, we strictly advise waiting a full 24 hours before parking any vehicles on it to allow the complex sub-base and mortar edgings to fully cure and settle.
Do you handle complex projects or commercial work?
Yes, we are fully equipped for both domestic garden transformations and larger commercial landscaping projects. Whether it's a private patio or a large-scale stone installation for a business premises, we provide the same level of precision and premium finish.
I have a unique project idea. How do I get an accurate price?
For unique or complex project designs, we recommend booking a site visit. This allows us to assess the ground levels, access, and material requirements in person, ensuring we can provide a 100% accurate, no-obligation quote.
Will my block paving driveway sink over time?
No. A sinking driveway is the result of a cowboy builder cutting corners on the foundation. At SJ Landscapes, over 70% of the work we do on a driveway is under the surface. We excavate to the correct depth, use high-grade MOT Type 1 sub-base, and heavily compact it in layers to ensure it lasts decades without shifting.
Do you provide a guarantee on your work?
Yes, we stand firmly behind the quality of our craftsmanship. All structural work, paving, and installations come with a comprehensive guarantee against poor workmanship. We also use premium materials that carry their own extensive manufacturer warranties.
